Language is knowledge infrastructure. Treat it as anything less (a commodity output, a vendor-by-vendor patchwork) and the cost shows up later: in rework, in drift, in audit findings.
In specialised language work, errors carry consequences: clinical, legal, financial. Specialist humans hold the ground truth: the verified human reference any AI output is measured against. They calibrate the tools, sign off the work, and carry the accountability that no model has yet learned to carry on its own. AI is the machinery: fast, tireless, and only as good as the terminology, translation memories and human review it runs on.
We call this Expert-at-the-Core: a human-in-the-loop AI governance framework for specialised translation. It is written down: five assistance levels, four consequence tiers, named accountability, and the refusals that go with them. Published so that it can be audited rather than believed. We apply this architecture to our own work and to clients who ask us to design their multilingual operation. Language_Tech Patras and our R&D programmes are where the work meets the rest of the field.
